Pool game is one of those ancient games, which were cherished by kings, emperors and other aristocrats. Marked changes have been incorporated in this game since its beginning in 15th century. This game is very similar to billiards and is played with a cue and various balls placed on a table. The major difference between the two games lies in the number of balls. Billiards was initially played only with three balls while this game was played with sixteen balls.
Gradually people began to develop a keen affinity towards this sport and very soon it began to be played as an indoor game. Later all necessary steps were taken to create a feel similar to the outdoor form of this game. Hence, a green cloth was laid on the table which would give the players an effect of green grass and help them forget for a while that they were playing this game inside the four walls. The table on which this game was played was rectangular and to prevent the balls from falling off, flat walls were set around the edges. These walls were similar to the banks of the river and therefore were commonly known as banks.
This game was played with a mace just like croquet and it is also said that billiards evolved from this game. Initially it was too difficult to play with a mace and hence 'cue' gradually replaced them. The 'cue' derived its name from the word 'queue' meaning 'tail' and since the tail was used by the player to strike the ball it became popular as 'cue'. By this time, the game became much advanced and even more demotic in nature. History reveals the fact that the popularity of the game had reached such zenith that it included more coverage than some prominent wars that were witnessed during ancient days. This is something astonishing and is a witness to the tremendous response this game had received from the people of that era.
Even after cue came into existence and was commonly used to strike the balls a demarcation existed between the two sexes. Women were barred from its use since it was felt that they were not too proficient and could tear the green table cloth with the cue which was a bit sharp. They were just allowed to use mace while playing and that too in a reluctant manner. Things have changed considerably over the years and the pool game is as fondly played by women as men and that too without any sort of demarcation among the sexes.
Over the years, pool game has gained tremendous popularity and hence this game is widely available even online for the avid fans of pool.
